Getting a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)

If you're looking to get a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) for rebated appointments, you can book a GP appointment and let them know you’d like to see a psychologist at Clear Wave Psychology.

1. Your GP will assess your needs and, if appropriate, prepare an MHTP.

2. Your GP may send the referral directly to us or provide it to you to forward.

Your first session is a welcoming space to begin your journey toward better mental health. The session will be at your pace and our aim is to create a calm, safe, and respectful environment.

Here’s what typically happens in the first appointment:

• Getting to Know You: Your psychologist will ask about your current concerns, personal history, and what brought you in. This helps us understand how to best support you.

• Setting Goals: Together, you’ll begin to explore what you hope to achieve through therapy, whether that’s coping strategies, deeper self-understanding, or practical tools for daily life.

• Explaining the Process: Your psychologist will explain how sessions work, answer any questions, and outline a plan tailored to your needs.

• Confidentiality: Everything you share is confidential, and we’ll explain any rare exceptions (like safety concerns) up front.

There’s no need to prepare anything in advance, just come as you are. We’re here to support you every step of the way.

An Autism & ADHD assessment at Clear Wave Psychology involves different steps to ensure a thorough and accurate understanding of your experiences and symptoms. This usually involves 4-5 appointments.

ADHD Assessments individually usually involve approximately 3-4 appointments.

1. Initial Consultation:
   We begin with an initial session to understand your concerns, medical history, and daily functioning. This helps determine whether a full Autism/ADHD assessment is appropriate.

2. Comprehensive Assessment:
   If we proceed, the psychologist will gather detailed information through:

   • Clinical interviews

   • Standardised questionnaires and behaviour rating scales (which may include input from parents, teachers, or partners)

   • Review of developmental, academic, and social history.

3. Scoring and Analysis:
   Your psychologist will analyse the data, compare it with diagnostic criteria (e.g. DSM-5), and assess whether autism/ADHD is the most appropriate diagnosis, or if other factors may be involved.

4. Feedback Session:
   You’ll be invited to a follow-up session to go through the results. The psychologist will explain the findings, provide a written report, and offer tailored recommendations for support, whether it’s therapy, school/work strategies, or a referral if needed.

Yes, we offer secure and confidential telehealth (online video) sessions for clients who prefer or require remote support. Telehealth is a flexible and effective way to access therapy from the comfort of your own home, especially if you're located remotely, managing a busy schedule, or simply feel more at ease online.

All you need is a private space, a stable internet connection, and a device with a camera. You can let us know when booking if you’d like your sessions to be via telehealth.

Yes, but we kindly ask for at least 3 business days notice to avoid a late cancellation fee. This helps us offer the time to someone else who may need it.

Most sessions are 50 minutes, with 10 minutes dedicated to preparation for your session and completion of clinical notes.

It depends on your individual needs, goals, and circumstances. Many clients start with weekly or fortnightly sessions, especially in the early stages of therapy when building momentum is helpful. As progress is made, sessions may become less frequent (e.g. monthly or as-needed).

Your psychologist will work with you to develop a schedule that feels manageable and supportive. You’re always welcome to adjust the frequency based on how you're feeling and what’s happening in your life.

The therapy approach we use will be tailored to your individual needs, goals, and preferences. We draw from a range of evidence-based modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Trauma informed Therapy and Mindfulness-based approaches, among others.

In your first few sessions, your psychologist will discuss options with you and explain the approach they recommend, so you’ll always feel informed and involved in your care. You are also welcome to let the psychologist know if you have a preferred modality in mind.
